My Favorite Teaching Books

Pedagogy…

Techniques and Principles in Language Teaching, by Diane Larsen-Freeman and  Marti Anderson
This book is full of very different, sometimes unusual, teaching methods. The authors describe exactly what a full lesson in each of these methods would look like.

Teaching Unplugged: Dogme in English Language Teaching, by Luke Meddings and Scott Thornbury
Dogme is all about letting the students generate their own material to work on together as a class, rather than using lots of other materials created by other people, like text books and workbooks. Student-generated material is more relevant to students’ lives than material created by corporations in other countries.

Minds on Fire: How Role-Immersion Games Transform College, by Mark C. Carnes
Almost everyone agrees that lecture-style classes are “kinda boring.” This book is an exploration — and defense — of role playing historic moments in the class. Aside from the necessarily cross-discipline and cross-cultural experiences that emerge, the research shows that students who role play take their education more seriously, take greater responsibility for their learning, and often find themselves with greater empathy for others.

Drama Techniques: A Resource Book of Communication Activities for Language Teachers, Third Edition, by Alan Maley and Alan Duff
This, like the dogme book, has lots of clearly-described ideas for classroom activities. If you want to get your students out of their chairs and moving around, you will love this book.

Teaching Grammar…

How to Teach Grammar, by Scott Thornbury
It doesn’t teach grammar per se, but it does show a variety of methods to teach grammar to your students. This is really helpful for reaching students with different learning styles.

Working Together as a Class…

Group Dynamics in the Language Classroom (Cambridge Language Teaching Library), by Tim Murphey and Zoltán Dörnyei
A good understanding of group dynamics makes all the difference between having a wonderful class and an awful class…for the teacher and students alike.
